Environmental Management: Ocean Acidification
When carbon dioxide from the atmosphere enters the ocean, it combines with seawater to form a weak acid called carbonic acid (H2CO3), which increases the acidity of the water, lowering its pH.

Ocean Acidification (Catalyst)

Ocean acidification is the ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's oceans, caused by the uptake of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Seawater is slightly basic (meaning pH > 7), and the process in question is a shift towards less basic conditions rather than a transition to acidic conditions (pH < 7).
