Introduction: Transit-oriented Development

A good TOD requires thoughtful planning and design. It is a move towards the utilisation of public transport, foot and cycle traffic combined with designing buildings and open spaces to be a mix of residential, recreational and retail/office spaces where people live, work and play.

Transit Oriented Development is the key to better cities
The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy has introduced a far more sophisticated concept of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) and a TOD standard to promote it.

Professor Newman explains how Transit Oriented Development (TOD) is a market-oriented process, and points out the number of TODs at Subiaco, The Esplanade and Wellard.

Getting the rail project on its feet was difficult- the local newspaper capitialised on the perception that ‘rail is expensive’, which is of course is what this blog terms ‘cost-only analysis’, a type of pseudo-analysis where the benefits that arise from the expenditure on higher quality are completely ignored.
