Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck (1937)
The reduction in crop prices following World War II, followed by drought, followed by the stock market crash in 1929 left farmers in the American West is dire straits. Many farm workers travelled to California, in search of work, but conditions were difficult and families were torn asunder.
