About the Editor

Kirsty Murray is a multi-award-winning author of more than 20 books for children and young adults. Based in Melbourne, she is passionate about Australian stories. Her work is published internationally and includes eleven novels as well as non-fiction, junior fiction, historical fiction, speculative fiction and picture books.

Kirsty’s work is widely studied in schools and universities and she has taught creative writing to thousands of  writers in schools, universities and libraries around the world. Kirsty has been a Creative Fellow of the State Library of Victoria and an Asialink Literature Resident in South India. She is currently a director on the board of the Australian Society of Authors and an advocate for readers and writers of all ages.

Kirsty Murray, editor of and contributor to Eat the Sky, Drink the Ocean, Stories of Adventure and Daring spoke with members of the SCBWI San Francisco North and East Bay chapter on March 29, 2017. She told the story of how the incredible collection of speculative fiction for young adults came about, literary rights in different parts of the country, how amazing art can come from tragedy, writing, and more.

"Anarkali": About the story 

Annie Zaidi and Mandy Ord have taken this well-known story in India, and re-imagined a future outcome for Anarkali that involves her finding a powerful way to transform and escape, rather than suffering a fate that was beyond her control. From the place within walls she finds a way to freedom to live the life she wanted. This story was originally published in Eat the Sky, Drink the Ocean, an intercontinental collection of speculative stories published by Allen and Unwin.
