WRITING GUIDE

How do I analyse the question? [Years 11-12]

In upper school you will not be asked to write down absolutely everything you know about a topic.

Instead, you are expected to interpret a question about one aspect of the topic.

IMPORTANT: Always answer the question as it has been asked. Analysing the question is crucial to ensuring all the aspects of the question are answered correctly. Breaking the question down into several parts can help you know how to approach the question and understand what you are being asked to do.

To do this you need to know:

Subject What is the topic of the question?
Instruction Words What instruction/direction have you been given? What does the essay want you to do? For example, does the question ask you to discuss, examine, analyse or compare?
Key Concepts Which aspect of the subject are you being asked to write about?
Additional Information Record the word count, due date, referencing style, format instructions and any instructions for submission. This becomes a helpful checklist.

Work through an example . . .
