Synopsis: The Hadley family lives in a fully-automated home that does everything for them. It even brushes their teeth! The two Hadley children spend most of their time in a nursery that can simulate any environment. The Hadley parents become troubled when the children use the nursery to visualize hostility toward them, so they shut down the room — leading to a fatal mistake for the parents.
Talking Points: the effect of technology on family and society, reality vs. fantasy, parenting, and discipline.
Ray Bradbury Theater: The Veldt
This film is from the ‘Ray Bradbury Theater’ American TV series, and includes a personal introduction by Ray Bradbury himself. Although written over 60 years ago, the “The Veldt” by science fiction writer Ray Bradbury raises some interesting points about how we live our lives today. After reading the story, stop and ask yourself how many people you know seem to be building their whole lives around Facebook, YouTube and their computer or i-whatever; just like the children and their high technology play room in Bradbury’s HappyLife home.
