Diwali - The Festival of Lights, is a major Hindu festival. It is celebrated in all parts of India, where it is a national holiday, and in Hindu communities worldwide. Diwali lasts from two to five days, depending on local custom. It falls during the Hindu month of Kartika (October to November).

Rangoli is a colourful design made on the floor near the entrance to a house to welcome guests. At Diwali, Hindus draw bright Rangoli patterns to encourage the goddess Lakshmi to enter their homes. Rangoli designs are made of coloured sand, rice, flour or flower petals.
